Lakeland, FL, April 10, 2013 — Today at SUN ‘n FUN, John and Martha King, Co-Chairmen of King Schools, announced that they have updated the King Online Flight Instructor Refresher Course (FIRC) to include a new lesson on scenario-based training (SBT).

“Scenario-based training is now part of the FAA Practical Test Standards, but most CFIs have not had training on how to incorporate scenarios in their lesson plans,” commented John. “The King Online FIRC now gives instructors tools and insights on how to implement scenarios that will teach their customers to effectively manage the risks associated with each flight,” continued John.

“Our goal is to provide relevant and important content with every lesson,” remarked Martha. “That’s why the King Online FIRC includes topics like SBT, conducting an effective flight review and identifying and changing at-risk behaviors,” concluded Martha.

King Schools released the first version of their online FIRC course in May of 2012 and it remains the only FIRC to provide an entirely paperless online renewal process with nothing to notarize and nothing to send in.

The King Schools FIRC program has been designed to run on the iPad and on all Windows and Mac Web browsers. It sells for $99 without CFI renewal processing or $124.95 with processing included.

Lakeland, FL, April 10, 2013 — Today at SUN ‘n FUN, John and Martha King, Co-Chairman of King Schools, announced that they will release an online Helicopter Flight Instructor Refresher Course (FIRC) by early summer. The good news is that helicopter CFIs wanting to renew their certificate online will no longer be forced to muddle through airplane specific topics that often have little or no relevance toward flying helicopters.

“Helicopter pilots and instructors often have to make do with training materials that have an airplane focus,” commented John. “As passionate helicopter pilots and instructors ourselves, we know that can be very frustrating,” continued John.

“We are excited to be able to provide helicopter instructors an alternative that is built just for them ‘from the ground up’,” remarked Martha. “Renewing flight instructors now have the opportunity to try something new, and we hope they will find our alternative to be engaging, educational and fun,” continued Martha.

“The goal is that by giving helicopter flight instructors more insight into topics that are focused on helicopter flying such as identifying and changing at-risk behaviors, and conducting an effective flight review, they will have more tools available to produce helicopter pilots truly ready to be pilot-in-command,’’ concluded John.

Just like King Schools’ General FIRC course, the helicopter specific course will provide an entirely paperless online renewal process with nothing to notarize and nothing to send in.

The King Schools FIRC program has been designed to run on the iPad and on all Windows and Mac Web browsers. It will sell for $99 without CFI renewal processing or $124.95 with processing included.

Lakeland, FL, April 10, 2013 — Today at SUN ‘n FUN, John and Martha King, Co-Chairman of King Schools, announced that they have released an online version of their Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) written exam preparation course. The new course takes customers through each important topic with full-screen, bite-sized video segments, averaging 10 minutes in length. Each lesson is automatically followed by a quiz utilizing actual FAA questions to check knowledge retention. The course automatically tracks customer progress and includes a Question Review section where customers can choose to view questions by subject area, answered status, marked questions or in any combination. Unlimited, random practice tests are also available.

“With the ATP deadline approaching for Air Crews, we knew it was time to put this course online,” remarked Martha. “Now the same time-proven ATP course, that has helped tens of thousands of pilots pass their ATP written, can be taken anywhere you are able to get your hands on an Internet-connected computer,” continued Martha.

“We are so confident in the effectiveness of our online ATP course that we guarantee customers will pass their FAA exam or they get their money back,” commented John. “The ATP is the largest and most difficult of the FAA exams,” added Martha. “It requires extensive study and we have put in tremendous effort to simplify and clarify each topic, while keeping it fun” concluded John.

All Airline flight crew members (even First Officers) must hold and ATP certificate by the August 1, 2013 deadline. The King Schools’ online course allows working pilots to complete their study while on the road. All they need is an Internet connection and a web browser.

The King Schools ATP course sells for $299. For more information, go to www.kingschools.com or call toll-free 1-800-854-1001 (worldwide +1-858-541-2200).

Brewer Trophy for Aviation Education “…for their passion and dedication in making aviation knowledge more accessible to pilots worldwide by combining elegant technology with clear, fun teaching featuring courseware that simplifies complex concepts for students.” The Brewer Trophy is presented annually for significant contributions of enduring value to aerospace education in the United States.

Jonathan Gaffney, President and CEO of the National Aeronautic Association and Chairman of the Selection Committee, said “We’re very proud of accomplishments of Martha and John King and all they have done to support aviation and aerospace education in the United States. They are truly some of the great ambassadors of the excitement and opportunity which exists in our industry.”
Pilots throughout the world regard John and Martha as their personal aviation mentors. Nearly every pilot has taken a King course and at one time almost half of each year’s crop of new private and instrument pilots in the United States used King Schools’ educational materials.

John began his aviation career as a child; his dad had an airplane and took John for rides. So began his love of aviation. He soloed in 1960. Then John met Martha at Indiana University in the 60s, they married and had a business franchise dealing with truck fleets. In 1969, they sold the business and decided to get their pilot’s licenses. They moved to California and launched their flying business out of a spare bedroom in their house. Today King Schools operates out of a dedicated complex in San Diego that includes a television and software production facility.

The Kings currently have their own Dassault Falcon 10, swapping captain and copilot duties on each leg when they fly. They have flown as pilots in every continent of the world except Antarctica, including a trip completely around the world via the length of Russia.

John and Martha are the first couple to each hold every category and class of FAA rating on their pilot and instructor certificates. Martha is the first and only woman to achieve this complete ratings sweep. In 2001, Martha was appointed by President Clinton to the First Flight Centennial Advisory Board and received NAA’s Henderson Trophy in 2005.

Both have received many aviation honors and accolades, including Pro Pilot’s Aviation Educator’s of the Year, 100 distinguished Aviation Heroes, and 100 Most Influential Women In Aviation (Martha).
Members of the Brewer Trophy Selection Committee were: Frank G. Brewer III, President, Brewer Trophy Aviation Education Association; Rob Brewer; Shelly Simi, Jeppesen; and former Brewer Trophy recipients, Dr. Tom Connolly (1995), Debbie Gallaway (2004) and Dr. Peggy Chabrian (2009). Jonathan Gaffney served as the Committee Chairman.

The award will be presented at the NAA Fall Awards Banquet on Tuesday, November 13 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.

###

International operations can be complicated and tricky. They are full of pitfalls and traps, and require specific additional knowledge to avoid them. “With our new International Operations Overview course, you’ll learn practical how-to information that will prepare you for the differences,” commented John King. “You’ll know what you don’t know, so you won’t be surprised by regulatory requirements, and will know how to get fully prepared for your international flight,” added Martha King.

“You have heard the quote, ‘If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter’,” commented John. “Well, it does take time and lots of work to make complex material appear simple,” continued John. “King Schools puts in that work and you will love the result. The KING courses are clear, simple and easy to understand,” observed Martha.

“The use of a syllabus increases learning effectiveness by ensuring that the instructor and their customer both have clearly defined, common goals for each flight lesson,” commented John King. “When using a King Syllabus, customers will know what to expect, and will have the opportunity to learn new concepts at home rather than in the airplane,” continued John. ”This will increase customer satisfaction by helping them excel at each new task,” commented Martha. “It will also save them money by reducing training hours required to reach their goal,” John emphasized.

“Most significantly, this syllabus incorporates concepts of risk management and supports scenario-based training,” continued John. “Making this important training tool available for free makes it easy for all flight instructors to use a professionally developed plan of action,” concluded Martha.

The course follows the latest guidance from the FAA recently released as revision “G” of FAA Advisory Circular 61-83, which specifies more up-to-date topics for flight instructors and puts emphasis on effectively teaching risk management. The King Schools FIRC includes the option to have King Schools handle all of the instructor’s certificate renewal paperwork, making it unnecessary for a Flight Instructor to visit their local FSDO in order to renew their certificate.

“Solving the two major problems in general aviation, the student dropout rate and the fatality rate, requires a fundamental change in the way we teach,” said John King. “And this program is designed to give renewing flight instructors fresh insights into ways they can help their customers to both become good risk managers and long term members of the pilot community,” King continued.

“The new guidance from the FAA has allowed us to move away from having to cover the same topics that flight instructors learned as private pilots, and to delve into areas that will be interesting, relevant and sometimes provocative for flight instructors,” Martha King commented. “This new approach will be truly refreshing for flight instructors,” continued Martha. “The goal is that by giving flight instructors more insight into topics such as identifying and changing at-risk behaviors, and conducting an effective flight review, they will have more tools available to produce pilots truly ready to be pilot-in-command,’’ added John.

“FIRC options for flight instructors have not changed much in recent years,” continued John. “Renewing flight instructors now have the opportunity to try something new, and we hope they will find our alternative to be engaging, educational and fun,” concluded John.

The King Schools FIRC program has been designed to run on the iPad and on all Windows and Mac Web browsers. It will sell for $99 without CFI renewal processing or $124.95 with processing included.

This course is appropriate for all pilots flying as part of a two-pilot crew and satisfies the newly published FAR 135.330, that requires CRM training for all part 135 operators.

“Flightcrews can be safer and more efficient when they are trained to work together well,” said John King. “Many general aviation and military pilots have not had this important training, and without the training they can often work at cross purposes as a two-pilot crew,” King continued. “The net result can be an actual deterioration in situational awareness and in risk management,” Martha King commented.

“Even crews that have established SOPs and that have flown together for some time, are sure to find a few gems in this course,” continued John. “We started with the idea of what it takes to become a great crew and filled this course with practical ideas that can be put to immediate use for increasing risk management and reducing workload,’’ concluded Martha.

The King Schools CRM course has been designed to run on the iPad and on all Windows and Mac Web browsers and sells for $199.
