How to Master the Power-Off 180 Landing: A Complete Guide for Commercial and CFI Checkrides

If you’re preparing for your commercial pilot checkride or CFI checkride, the power-off 180 accuracy approach and landing is one of those maneuvers you need to own. Seasoned pilots call it a spot landing, and for good reason: the goal is simple, the execution takes practice, and the payoff is a skill you’ll be grateful for long after the checkride is behind you.

What Is the Power-Off 180?

The FAA calls it the power-off 180° accuracy approach and landing. That’s a mouthful, but it describes exactly what you’re doing: a power-off approach from abeam your touchdown point, through a 180° turn, to a touchdown on or within 200 feet of your target spot on the runway.

The practical application is serious. If you ever experience a real engine failure in a single-engine aircraft, this is the skill that gets you down safely. Practicing commercial maneuvers like this one sharpens your ability to read altitude, judge glide angle, and account for wind effects all the way to the runway.

And here’s something that makes the power-off 180 a little more approachable: by pulling the throttle to idle, you eliminate one variable entirely. No power adjustments to manage. You’re working with glide speed, flaps, and your flight path.

Setting Up for Success

Before you even start the maneuver, take a moment to understand the wind. Then fly a normal downwind leg at 1,000 feet above airport elevation. Lower the gear and complete your before-landing checklist before you reach abeam your touchdown point.

When you arrive at the downwind key position, directly abeam your touchdown spot, close the throttle and trim for your recommended power-off glide speed. You’ll notice the rate and angle of descent is steeper than you’re used to with power. Plan accordingly.

A few setup tips that will serve you well on spot landings:

-Turn base earlier than you would on a normal power approach
-Use at least medium bank angles in your turns — less time in the turns means better situational awareness
-Estimate headwind on final by watching how much crab you carry on base leg

The Base Leg Key Position

There are two key positions in this maneuver: the downwind key position and the base leg key position. The base key position is where your touchdown point is 45 degrees off your base leg. You want to see approximately 800 feet above the runway at this point, and this is where you’d normally lower partial flaps.

Here’s an important mindset shift for the base key position: being a little high is far better than being low. When you’re high, you have options. You can add flaps, slip, or square your turn to final to create a longer ground track and lose altitude. When you’re low, your options are more limited.

If you find yourself low before the base key position, start correcting early. You can turn to final earlier to cut the corner, or leave the flaps up to preserve your glide. For maximum glide distance, keep flaps up all the way and plan for a no-flap landing if necessary.

One important rule on this maneuver: once you put flaps down, the FAA does not want you to bring them back up. So use the least flaps you think you need, and hold them until you’re confident in the approach.

Managing a High Final Approach

If you arrive on final with full flaps and you’re still high, a slip is your best tool to increase drag and get down quickly. What you don’t want to do is dive to burn off excess altitude. Diving gets you fast, and a fast approach on a spot landing leads to floating through the flare and touching down well beyond your 200-foot window.

If you’re fast in the flare and can see you’re going to land long, do not force the airplane onto the runway. That risks nosegear damage or a prop strike. The correct technique is to gradually bleed airspeed, flare just before the touchdown spot, and touch down just above stall speed.

Common Errors on the Power-Off 180

These are the mistakes pilots make most often on commercial maneuvers and CFI checkrides:

1. Failing to establish and maintain best glide speed
When you pull power to idle, the nose wants to drop and maintain your trimmed downwind speed. Hold the nose up, slow to best glide speed, and retrim. Best glide speed gives you maximum distance in a power-off situation. Anything faster or slower and you won’t go as far.

2. Flying the pattern like a normal power approach
The most common setup error. Pilots fly too far downwind before turning base because that’s what they’re used to with power. On a power-off 180, turn base earlier than normal.

3. Lowering flaps too early
Early flap deployment increases your rate of descent and can leave you short of the runway. Hold flaps until at least the base key position, where you can better judge the approach.

4. Forcing the airplane onto the runway when fast
This is the opposite error, and it tends to develop after pilots correct for the first three. They overcorrect, arrive high and fast, dive to lose altitude, and then try to force the airplane down during the flare. After landing short, this is the most costly mistake you can make on spot landings.

Best Glide Speed: The Rule You Cannot Break

If you think you’re going to land short of your spot, do not raise the nose to stretch the glide. It feels intuitive but it doesn’t work. You’ll land even further short. Maintain best glide speed and use your remaining options: flight path and flaps.

And always remember: this is a practice maneuver. If it’s not going to work out, add power and go around. No spot landing is worth the alternative.

Practice Makes Precision

The power-off 180 is not a maneuver you can fly on autopilot. Even a perfect setup doesn’t guarantee a perfect touchdown. What it does guarantee is that you’ve given yourself the best possible chance. Practice this maneuver in different wind conditions, at different runways, and your eye for altitude, descent angle, and wind correction will sharpen considerably.

When you can consistently put the airplane on your spot, you’ll have a skill that goes far beyond the commercial pilot checkride or CFI checkride. You’ll have the judgment to handle a real engine failure with confidence.
