Behind the Prop

Behind the Prop is the Podcast for anyone involved in aviation from general aviation to professional pilots. Our hosts Bobby Doss is the owner of a flight school in Houston, Texas, and Wally Mulhearn is a pilot for a major airline and is also a designated pilot examiner (DPE) based in Houston, Texas. Weekly they tell stories, share lessons and tips from behind the prop. Together they have over 24,400 hours of flight time (Wally has over 24,000 of those) and collectively they provide very unique perspectives on general aviation, airplanes, and all things aviation.

After 60 years of flying with 4,800 hours, most of which in my Mooney, a tragic event occurred, an offer was made to buy my Mooney and management stated I could not turn it down. After surviving the resulting depression of being grounded, I turned to sail planes, things that are extremely competent in flying without an engine and evidently will remain aloft far longer than 52 gallons of 100 octane would carry my Mooney. Sailplanes are not to be compared with gliders which our brave heroes flew in WWII. What a great challenge and learning experience. This flying is for the pure joy, not the need to go from A to B in record time. So, when do John and Martha get into this market segment.

For the record, my ground school training was with Sanderson films in the early 60’s. King School’s is a clear advancement on that technology.

Keep Flying and no motor is quiet.
